Both sides were Englishmen who gloried in the name of England. Nor can it, as is often thought, be called a war between different nations. Nor was it at first so much for gaining new liberties as for preserving the old. The American Revolution was not, then, any struggle for emancipation from slavery and the colonists were free men. Of all the race they were the most tenacious of their rights and the most jealous of their liberties. Then, because they were not satisfied with church ordinances, they were driven by Archbishop Laud to seek religious freedom across the sea. These were the Puritans, who had fought the wars of liberty in England. Precedents, then, are by no means wanting among Englishmen for the successful resistance of arbitrary despotism whenever it encroached upon their liberties.Īnother fact that must be noted is the character of the colonists, and especially those of Massachusetts. It is the descendants of those very freemen described by Tacitus, who not only dictated the policy of Edward the Confessor but extorted the great charter of human rights from King John in the thirteenth century.Īnd during the next four hundred years, too, this spirit was not dormant, but came to the surface on three great occasions–the confirmation of the Magna Carta by Edward I, the Petition of Right to Charles I, and the Revolution that drove James II from his throne.Īlthough it is characteristic of Englishmen to have great love for a king so long as he respects the liberties of the people, yet the fact that they drove out one king, rebelled against two and executed three, shows clearly enough that there was always a strong idea of the divine right of the people as well as of kings. Such an honorable antiquity of political ideas has made the race very conservative of self-government. ![]() It is the same genius for freedom that has led the race from the primeval forests of Germany to the Thirteenth Amendment of the Constitution. One of the interesting round goals is “Total Food Cost of the birds in your habitat,” which encourages you to get either a lot of birds out or at least birds that require a lot of food. In addition to the new birds (81 in total), there are also some new end of round goals as well as goal cards Some of the new birds even have new “once between turns” powers that can help your food gaining (and maybe power up some of those “Round End” powers!). It’s worth no points by itself, but if it helps you get more birds out in the other habitats, that can only be a good thing. Look at this bird that counts as two birds played, which will just enhance your (in this case) food-taking action. Some birds aren’t necessarily worth points but they will help build your engine by making the actions you take more fruitful. You don’t want too many of them in your habitats or they aren’t going to score much (though it helps that they are worth a few points of their own). Some of the other birds also require hoarding food to make them pay off just when you activate them. ![]() Not all of the birds have Round End powers, of course. The Common Swift can get you up to 5 points per round, but that’s only if you’ve been hoarding worm food for just that reason. They’re not super-powerful unless you set them up right, but they can be quite lucrative when you are able to. The Round End powers are actually some of the more interesting ones. The rest of it is the same no matter where you are playing it) (You can consider this a review of the expansion as well as the app, though here I’m not going to be talking about things like component quality of the actual boardgame expansion. Yes, there are a bunch of new birds in this expansion, with brand new powers that include blue (aqua, maybe? I don’t know) “end of round” powers as well as some other interesting ones. What does this add to an already wonderful game? Yes, the Wingspan: European Expansion is now out in digital, and it is just as amazing as the app itself. Instead, I want to talk about what Monster Couch released just last Thursday, May 5. You can see my review of the app here, where I explain the gameplay, so I’m not going to get into that here. The app even has beautiful renditions of the amazing artwork! Online play oddities aside, the game has very few bugs that I’m aware of and it’s a brilliant digital adaptation of the boardgame designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games. The European Expansion also includes an additional tray for storing the growing collection of birds (past, present, and future), as well as 15 purple eggs, extra food tokens, and a colorful new scorepad designed for both multi-player and single-player scoring. The Wingspan app published by Monster Couch Games has been a wonderful app since it came out in October 2020. Along with the new bonus cards, they’re designed to be shuffled into the original decks of cards (and cards from future expansions). These birds feature a variety of new abilities, including a number of birds with round end abilities, abilities that increase interaction between players, and birds that benefit from excess cards/food. In this first expansion to Wingspan, the scope of the world increases to include the regal, beautiful, and varied birds of Europe. ![]() ![]() ![]() The only differences are the colors and the more prominent brush strokes I used… because I wanted a more rustic look. This change may also be interpreted in terms of the increased cognitive load that results from tasks requiring the coordination of processing and storage (see Barrouillet, Bernardin, & Camos, 2004, for a discussion of cognitive load). Older adults may be more likely to suffer from changes in functioning of the frontal lobes, which leads to decreased executive functioning abilities ( Myerson, Emery, White, & Hale, 2003). (1999) was interpreted within the broader framework of a frontal-function hypothesis, given the large role of the frontal cortex in controlling behavior and its links to WM performance ( Engle, 2001). Researchers investigating the causes of age-related differences in WM have proposed several views, including single mechanism views (such as processing speed declines, e.g., Salthouse, 1996) and multiple mechanism views (such as dynamic contextual control and output forgetting, e.g. The current study continued in this line of research by conducting an in-depth investigation of adult age differences in three measures of memory span, and extended previous research by including a large number of participants who fall into the age category of oldest-old (90 + years of age). Given the importance of WM to cognitive functioning, age-related differences have been investigated to improve our understanding of the causes of decline in WM performance ( Craik & Bialystock, 2006 Dobbs & Rule, 1989). For example, the link between WM and reading comprehension is well-established ( Daneman & Carpenter, 1980), as well as the relationship of WM and general fluid intelligence ( Salthouse & Pink, 2008 Gray, Chabris, & Braver, 2003). A number of important cognitive functions have been linked to WM processes. WM is considered an active portion of the memory system it is “a temporary storage system under attentional control that underpins our capacity for complex thought” ( Baddeley, 2007, p. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role of working memory (WM) as a critical component of adult cognition ( Babcock & Salthouse, 1990 Bopp & Verhaeghen, 2005). Focusing research efforts on the oldest segment of the adult population is therefore an important challenge for psychology. Recent demographic trends also indicate major increases in the segment of the population whose age falls into the category of “oldest-old,” yet research into the cognitive capabilities of individuals is limited ( Bäckman, Small, Wahlin, & Larsson, 2000). This number is projected to grow to 20% of the population by the year 2050 (or 88.5 million US Census, 2009). In the year 2009, the number of people in the United States aged 65 or older accounted for 13% of the population (or 39 million people). Implications of these findings for understanding strategic processing abilities in late life are discussed. Correlation analyses indicated the strongest negative correlation with age occurred with the size judgment span task. Participants’ recall patterns in the size judgment span task revealed that the two oldest groups of adults showed the largest decreases in recall performance across output serial positions, but did not differ significantly from each other. To test this hypothesis, we examined output serial position curves of recall data from three span tasks: forward and backward digit span and size judgment span. Previous research suggests that measures of working memory are more sensitive to age effects than simple tests of short-term memory ( Bopp & Verhaeghen, 2005 Myerson, Emery, White, & Hale, 2003). We examined adult age differences in short-term and working memory performance in middle-aged (45–64 years), young-old (65–74 years), old-old (75–89 years) and oldest-old adults (90 years and over) in the Louisiana Healthy Aging Study. ![]() ![]() Goodman was a graduate of a wide range of schools, which include advanced reconnaissance and target analysis training, an advanced urban combat course and a course to operate small unmanned aerial drones.
